Staff Highlight: Lesley Malone, Group Events Coordinator

Get to know Lesley Malone, Group Events Coordinator at the Athena Healthcare Group. Lesley coordinates events and activities for the residents at the Athena Healthcare Group care homes.

Tell us a bit about your job: what tasks do you oversee from day to day?

I’m the Group Events Coordinator for Abbey Wood Lodge and Parklands Lodge. I arrange meaningful trips and activities for our residents from visits to local places of beauty such as the Lake District and seaside visits to days out at local restaurants, cafes and shopping trips. I also organise reminiscing trips, either to places residents used to work such as schools if their previous profession was a teacher, or arrange events to trigger happy memories such as musical entertainment from artists who perform as the like of Frank Sinatra or Tom Jones. As a group we also love to generate family involvement and initiate new friendships with people in to local community through our care forum initiative.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Sharing my life with the residents and having them share their lives with me in return. I love hearing their stories and it’s so wonderful to see them enjoying themselves. My role isn’t like a job to me, it’s just like being part of a big warm family. I love that the residents remember who I am and enjoy my company, that in itself is so rewarding.

Outside work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Family is very important to me and I love spending time with my husband and my family. I have two sons and a daughter; one of my sons lives in Australia so I spend a lot of time on Skype chatting to him. I also really enjoy eating out and going for family meals with my family in the UK. In my spare time I am also a wedding planner!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

My grandmother always said: “Live life to the full” and that’s exactly what I do. It’s also what I help the residents of the Athena care homes to do.

“The lovely staff do such a wonderful job and although my Grandad may not remember what he's just had for lunch, in the photos we can clearly see he enjoys the activities and trips offered. I'd almost go so far as to say I'm a little jealous of my Grandad's new home!”
